Told Bedtime Stories

H, we told bedtime stories to each other last night after prayers.

It was just perfect.

We all read and said prayers together, sure. But then mom went to tuck in K and I stayed to snuggle you for just a bit.

You asked if we could tell each other stories. I said yes. And you insisted on going first.

You did a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with some of the most ferocious and spooky voice techniques for the proper effect.

I told a story about a beautiful girl in a castle who happened to have your name. She had three awful step-sisters, with your aunt’s names. A fairy-godmother with “K’s ” name.

At in the end she met a prince who happen to have MY name.

With each familiar layer you got more and more excited.

By the end, I nearly had to peel you off the ceiling you were pinging around with so much energy.

When we were all done, you asked me:

You wish you recorded all that, don’t you?

Because I keep telling you I want us to start a podcast where you and I talk about things.

We would keep it for ourselves at first, and then maybe publish it all one day if we felt like it.

Your right though…

I wish I did have it all recorded.

I love you.

Mermaid And Wonder Woman

It occurs to me that I forgot to write a post about Halloween this year.

What is wrong with me?

H, you went as a Mermaid.
K, you went as Wonder Woman.

K, mom and I left work early to go to your fall festival.

Mom and you were doing a cake walk when I got there.

We stopped at nearly every stall and played nearly every game before calling it quits.

Your favorite thing was playing on the big playground, mom and I shadowing your every move.

We left with a boatload of candy by 5 and went to get H.

You girls changed into your costumes at home and we left our house for truck-or-treat at church by 5:45.

Most year’s, trunk-or-treat is in the church’s back parking lot and is relatively low key. This year it was in the front lot – just off the loop – and attracted TONS of people. (Not a bad thing.)

H, you ran into a few friends from school and wanted to play in the five or six available bounce houses all night. K, you were honestly too cold to enjoy much, and insisted that I carry you everywhere we went.

Mom and I were scheduled to hand out candy at a truck with our Sunday School class, but there were so many people we ran out of candy 5 minutes into our shift.

We left after that. It became bitterly cold as the sun began to go down.

To top it off though we stopped to trick or treat at half a dozen houses, probably a hundred yards west down our street.

Here’s the pumpkin I carved two days before.

I love you.

Be With You

H, I took you to the dermatologist today.

Mom had this important meeting to prepare for…

(Which she nailed by the way.)

So you and I left the house around 8:40 to make your 9:00 appointment.

It was standard fare.

But we waited – uh – pretty much forever.

I mean, from the time we got there until we saw the doctor was an entire hour.

We talked and joked, pointed out things in the room to each other, looked out the window, and finally watched Netflix on my phone.

We changed seats a dozen times.

You sat in my lap for the longest time too.

Afterward, as I was driving you to school, I told you:

I just love hanging out with you. Even though we had to wait a long time this morning, and it was kind of boring, I’m sure glad I got to be with you. If we are doing something fun – or something not so fun – I just love getting to spend time with you.

I still do.

You replied: “Me too, Dad.”

I love you.
